Alex turned her head to look at Wesley. "I don't have to... but I probably will." she said, replying to the first part. She wasn't sure it was the right time, but she figured that this was as good a time as any.

Alex was afraid that he wouldn't lover her anymore... that he would decide that a vampire isn't worth it. But she hoped for the best.

"Wes... I'm... I'm a vampire." Alex blurted out finally. That was the best way that she could put it. There was no easy way to tell the man that she loved that she was a blood thirsty creature now.

"Wes... I'm... I'm a vampire."

Oh.

Wesley didn't know what to say, so he decided to say exactly what he thought. "Oh."

This was by far the most awkward moment he had ever had with Alexandrea.

"So, uh... when did that happen?" he asked softly, almost sympathetically. "I mean, you weren't a vampire when I first met you. I'm pretty sure."

Being generally a paranormal journalist, Wesley had written stories on vampires in New York before. Most of them had never been printed due to popularity, but that wasn't the point. He knew atleast a little bit about vampires.

"It happened after you left..." Alex replied solomnly. "I was in the tavern and a man was threatning to kill someone. You know I have never been able to watch someone die... I decided to say something, and... he attacked me instead. It was the most painful thing that I have ever felt in my life." She said, and she had felt some pretty painful things.

"But you're right... I deffinately wasn't a vampire when I met you." Alex said with a nod. "No do you see why I had to do what I did?" she asked. Alex didn't want to say that it wasn't completely the danger of him being with her that made her believe she had to do that... but the fact that she was afraid he wouldn't love her anymore after she told him.

"Wow. I'm sorry, Alex. I don't know what to say. It would be... terrible to live that long," Wesley said. He wished he hadn't. "No, no, that didn't come out right. I shouldn't have said that. I mean...well, there are some good things. You know..."
He was silent for awhile.

"Um, you get to be twenty-two for the remainder of your life, right? You don't ever have to suffer through being old like me," he started. "Oh, and you don't have to be scared of some things because there are only some things that can kill you now. Is... that right? I'm not an expert on vampires..."

Wesley was realizing he was rambling and had no idea what he was saying or why.
"Um, sorry, I'll stop..now..."

Probably the alchohol, he thought. Or maybe I'm just rationalizing because I feel responsible.

"No do you see why I had to do what I did?"

He wasn't sure if he did or not.

Alex wasn't sure what he was trying to say at first. But slowly she got the point. Not only was she dangerous to him, but he would get old and she would still be young. After a while that would look bad. She wrinkled her nose at the mere thought of it.

"You broke of the engagement... because you are a vampire?"

"Well, yes. Wes, you know as well as I do that it wouldn't be healthy for you to be married to a vampire. It would be dangerous. What if I killed you? Or worse... what if I made you like me? I don't know if I could ever live with myself if I did anything like that, Wesley."

"...oh," said Wesley again. So the breakup wasn't his fault. Atleast not entirely. He found that this thought brought dissapointingly little comfort.
He wanted to point out that his life wasn't really worth that much anyway, and that he probably only had around fifteen years at most longer to live (as was the life expectancy in those years), but that would only make it worse.

He was silent. That wasn't because he had nothing to say. He had a lot to say, but no way to put it in to words.

"I wish there was a way to go back in time," he thought out loud. Then, Wes once again spoke to Alex.

"If there's anything... I mean... Is...?"
Damn, he thought. Why is it so hard to talk to her?

"Is there anything that I can do to make you happier?" Wes said finally. "I'd like to see you smile again."
Her smile had always made him feel ever so slightly better, and he could really use that right now.

"I wish there was a way to go back in time,"

Alex nodded, "So do I, more than anything." she agreed with a shrug. If she could turn back time she would never get involved with Ghoby Tween, she would have never went to the Bell Tavern that day when Slypher was there... there were a lot of things she wished she could go back and change.

"Is there anything that I can do to make you happier?" Wes said finally. "I'd like to see you smile again."

Alex bit her lip, "I don't know, Wesley. I would be happy if..." she paused as she took his hand in her own cold ones and turned to look at him, "I could have you back without endangering your life." she said. But that was impossible. "But because that is not possible..." she added. Of course. "Give me one last chance to be close to you, to hold you in my arms and me in yours."

That might be a long shot even for Wesley. Alex wasn't asking for much. Just to sit there with him... so she can be there like she had promised for a few moments more. Then Alex would have to return to the ball, which now seemed petty in the light of sitting there with Wesley.

"Give me one last chance to be close to you, to hold you in my arms and me in yours."

"That's a simple request," Wesley weakly replied with forced, sad smile. He reluctantly put an arm around her shoulders and pulled her closer.
She seemed so perfect, wearing that dress that he assumed was for the ball, keeping her calm so much better than he ever could...
He was getting choked up again. He had to be more careful.

"You look nice. Every one at the ball will probably want to dance with you."

Alex smiled as Wesley pulled her closer and her head naturally rested on his shoulder. She could sit like that forever and not have any problem with it. If only time could stop and let it last longer. Perhaps longer than forever, because Alex felt that with as little time as she would be able to have with Wesley... forever might not be enough.

With a small intake of air Alex slipped her arm over his waist. Just sitting there felt nice.

"You look nice. Every one at the ball will probably want to dance with you."

"I doubt it." Alex replied carefully. She was blissfully unaware that most of the guys in town had a thing for her. "Besides, I would only ever dance with you."

"Besides, I would only ever dance with you."

"But... what will you do at the ball, then?" Wesley asked softly. Wasn't the point of the ball to dance?
He understood, though. He was slowly realizing that she really did still love him, which he had had a few small doubts about. Wesley wouldn't want to dance with anyone else, either.

"But... what will you do at the ball, then?"

Alex shurgged, "Watch everyone else have fun. The ball is for the town, not for me. Clauden was in need of a good social event where nothing was burned down or destroyed for once." she said as she took his hand in hers, "That's why I want you to come. Because you also need something that won't kill you." she said, refering to herself. "Maybe it would be better if you came and tried to mingle with some other girls."

Alex hated saying that, but it was the only way that she thought she could get Wesley to move on. "Wes, once you find a girl that won't be tempted to kill you every now and then... you'll probably be a hundred times happier, and that would make it easier to forget about me." She added. Alex didn't move from her position close to Wesley, but she thought she probably should have after saying that.

"Maybe it would be better if you came and tried to mingle with some other girls."

Wesley winced slightly. He didn't even like to think about mingling with other girls, let alone becoming romantically involved with one.

"Wes, once you find a girl that won't be tempted to kill you every now and then... you'll probably be a hundred times happier, and that would make it easier to forget about me."

"I don't want to forget about you," Wesley said for the second time that day. "Alex, I gave a small part of my heart to Marie and I gave the rest to you. I don't think that I am even capable of loving anyone else anymore. I'm...sorry, but... that's how I feel. "

Alex sighed, "Well... I can't change how you feel. I'm just sorry that it had to turn out like this." she held tighter to Wesley, not wanting to let him leave again. "Make no mistake that I love you, Wesley."she said finally. "I think seeing you with another girl would probably make me pretty jealous. Imagine that. Me, jealous." she said with a chuckle.

"I think seeing you with another girl would probably make me pretty jealous. Imagine that. Me, jealous."

"You won't have to be jealous," Wesley assured her with a soft smile. She had laughed... sort of. That was more than he had asked for. He had to let her go.
He ran a hand over the back of her hair before reluctantly saying,
"I... I guess I should let you go...to your ball."

Why did he have to let her go? He didn't want her to go. He wanted her to stay there beside him.

Suddenly, Wesley realized that he had leaned in to give her a kiss, and that hardly seemed appropriate now. He quickly drew back, his eyes glistening with new tears.

"Sorry..."

"I... I guess I should let you go...to your ball."

Alex nodded slowly. She almost didn't want to go back. "Theinvitation is still open, Wes... you can still come." she said finally. "It would--" she paused, he had leaned in to kiss her. As soon as his soft, warm lips touched her cold ones she felt her body tense up. Not that she didn't like the kiss, but she was trying to fight the urge to take it too far. A million different ways that she could kill him ran through her head, but she would never do a single one of them because he was her Wesley, and she would die before she killed him.

"Sorry..."

Lucky for him it was a quick kiss, and nothing to worry about. He had pulled away as soon as he realized what he was doing. Alex tried to smile in response. "It's okay, Wes." she said smoothly, "A kiss I might could handle... now if you were bleeding or something... that would be a different story." Alex tenderly raised a hand to touch his cheek, "Souldn't I get a good bye kiss anyway?" she tried to joke in midst of the seriousness.
