Elaina smiled at Marius, "Then I would have to thank you for recommending me." Elaina said as she shoved her hands in her pockets. 'What are you doing?! He's the enemy! ARGH!' she thought to herself. She didn't understand why she was so... why she was like she was when she got near Marius, but whatever it was got her fired and it needed to stop.

Elaina then forced her smile into a blank look. "What do you say sherriff?"

Clay called into the kitchen to his wife, "Jean, hope its no problem, but it looks like your going to have to make a second helping for another guest."

Jean sighed and cut more potatoes, beef, and carrots for stew.

Clay turned to Elaine, "Sit eat something," and then addressed Marius, "Ya got some nerve you dirty Fed. I hate ya Washington types, no manners, no courtesy, no tact. Yar sittin at my table, in my county, tellin me that I don't have any authority to hire anybody. Sir my pa was the sheriff of Cluaden when ya were still wettin yar diapers."

Clay was getting really agitated he wasn't sure what was going on and why the feds were so interested in Clauden. Clay remembered Elaine from a previous case when she was a PI. He didn't trust private investigators much becuase it seemed they were wild cards. But today, she looked like the lesser evil.

"Ya probably been pushin papers in Washington," CLay said, "Probably some graduate of an Ivy League School where they teach ya a bunch of stuff that sounds good but don't work. I ain't lettin no fed push me round. I'll make this concession with you, I have a 50 percent say in what goes on in my sheriff's office. Otherwise I will do two things, file papers to attempt to make Clauden a sovergn nation or resign."

Jean brought in the stew and served everybody.

Clay started to tel a story, "Once upon a time there was these men who wanted something different from what the rest of the nation wanted. These men had been runnin thier lands just the way they liked. But some fancy guys up north couldn't mind thier own business and wanted to run things for them. Eventually the southern boys lost, but only after a bunch of yanks got killed. Show me yar papers fancy boy."

Clay started coughing on his soup, Marius was right, the mayor was a man who cared for only statistics. Since Clay had been Sheriff the crime had only steadily increased.

Little known to Clay the mayor had actually sent Clay a letter in the mail that would arrive tomorrow giving Marius control over Clauden for one week, as a trial period.

Elaina nodded to Jean, "Thanks." she said as she took her seat. She ate soup and listened to the boys argue. At one point she just had to laugh. She laughed so hard that soup almost spew out her nose. "Woah Mr. Edwards... you are no more authoriy in this town than I am unless you have writen word from the president himself." she said with a smile. "Sure there's been an increase in crime rates... but with me on his team Mr. Edwards... I'm going to take down all those criminals." she said with a slight chuckle as she kicked him under the table very briefly.

Elaina took another bite of her soup. "Your wife is a great cook Mr. Hallow." Elaina's eyes went wide, "Aw man... oh crap... I for got Albert!" she stood without finishing her soup. "I have to get going... don't give in without a fight sherriff ole boy." she said with a grin before she rished out.

Roland grabbed the papers and smiled. He looked down to his badge and picked it off the table. He study the papers closely. His eyes looked the papers up and down closely. He grabed Raphael's papers that he had given before he left Clauden on news that his mother was dieing. He placed the papers together looking everything up and down. Something wasn't right the papers seemed to be in order. Roland sighed.
"Sorry to bother you Mr. Edwards." He said. "Boss maybe we can talk later....i have a friend in town the Owner of the Steel Hearts Bounty Hunters. If this man gets rid of you He would be glade to accpet you."

He gave the man his papers back.

Roland walked out of the house.

Clay cooked and cleaned the week he was removed as sheriff. he attended his yard and picked up several pieces of dog crap that had accumulated. He slept until late in the morning and had a rather nice time.

Then his trial week was over and the crime rate was still sky high.

"Hah," Clay said, "I'm going back to work."

Clay left to the jail.
