Clay waited two days and two nights for the new sheriff to pick up his keys, gun, and tin star. He straightened things around his home, cleaned the outhouse, etc. etc. in his retirement.

But the new sheriff never came.

"Ta hell with tha new guy," Clay said, "Ain't even bothering to get the keys to the jail. That just ain't how it's done. I'm going back on patrol."

Jean opened Sydney's door and cleared her thraot several times very loudly. When Sydney didn't wake up she began to straighten the room trying to make as much noise as possible so the woman would wake up.

Sydney woke to the sound of what seemed like a crazed chimp trying to climb the bookcase. Her eyes bolted open, and she sat straigt up, looking frantically around for the monkey. When the monkey wasn't there, she saw... Jean. Cleaning up. Well, apparently the woman had another tiff with Sydney, so she politely coughed and looked at the woman quizically.
"Uhm... You want anything, Mrs. Hallow?" she asked in the kindest tone she could muster.

"Oh I'm sorry," Jean said, "I didn't mean to wake you I was just tidying up a bit. But since you are awake..." Jean said and sat down on the end of the bed.

"I don't know how long you are planning to stay here. I understand you have spooks in your home. Well, I was thinking, It is kind of nice having a woman in the home, and well...can you keep a secret?"

Jean didn't wait for an answer, having spent much of her life alone, with her husband being out so much, she was starved to have somebody to talk to.

"I'm five months pregnant, but you mustn't tell Clay. He would be so worried, with him losing his job and such. Anyway, I was hoping maybe you could stick around and act as my midwife," Jean continued.

"I wouldn't be able to pay anything, but you could stay here and I would feed you."

Sydney's eyes metaphorically doubled in size. She just wanted a place to sleep...
"Uhh... I... It..." she stammered, and took a deep breath. She had never even seen a newborn baby, much less actually been a midwife. She had virtually no knowledge of the procedure, and... Well, if she read up on it, maybe she could do it. There would be blood, screaming, pain, all those sort of things, but the baby probably wouldn't kill Sydney. And what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Oh, if only her attitude was that positive.

"I... Guess I could do that. Since you're being so nice, letting me stay in your home... Yeah, yeah I'll do it." she said, smiling.
Oh my dear sweet God in heaven, what the hell did I just do? she thought as she spoke.

"Well that's just wonderful," Jean said. "Make sure you don't tell Clay though. So far he hasn't noticed," Jean said cradeling her stomache.

"I'll get you some books on delivering a child. You look like a fast learner so I have complete confidence in you. I'm gonna have to get some clothes fot it though, and keep them in the closet. I can use Travis's old crib."

Jean smiled at Sydney, "It's so nice having a lady in the house again."

Sydney nodded and smiled, but inside she was wondering what the bloody hell she had just gotten herself into. Oh well, she thought. No way out now.

With that thought in mind, she tried fruitlessly to fall back asleep. Images of childbirth flared through her mind, and she couldn't even close her eyes. Instead, she stood up, and pulled hear coat over her shoulders briskly. She walked out the door, and through the house, out to the porch. Once she was there, she sat down on the ground, stared off into the windy weather, and checked her pockets. Not in there... Or there... Aha! She pulled out her little red book, along with that damned pen. Oh well, beggars can't be choosers. Using the emotions that the forthcoming childbirth gave her, she began writing down word after word, which transformed into paragraph, which transformed into an entire page in the blink of an eye.

Jean retired herself to a chair in the living room. She sat, feeling lonely, and waited for Clay to return from wherever.

Jean was worried, worried that money was going to be a problem for them with a new baby and all. Clay would have to find work soon, she thought, even if he had to work shoveling manure.

Jean thought she felt something in her abdomen move. "I have a hunch that this is going to be a girl," she said to herself.

"Sydney," she yelled to the woman outside, "wouldn't it be nice if I had a little girl to even this house out a bit?"

Sydney looked over her shoulder at Jean, and smiled slightly.
"A girl certainly would help keep a good balance." she said, in the sweetest tone she knew how to make. Unfortunately, it came out as sounding slightly biased, even though that wasn't her intent.
"But don't go listening to me. Children, as you've seen, aren't really my area of expertise. You know better than I how kids operate."

"It sure is going to be a lot of work having a baby around," Jean said trying to hint to Syndney that she would be sonn asked to nanny.

"Kids do the wildest things. When Travis was a toddler he put an entire bullet shell up his nose. Had to take him to the doctor to get it out," Jean said.

"Oh if only somebody could help tned to them things like that wouldn't happen."

Sydney caught what the woman was hinting at, and frankly, she didn't like it one bit. But, just in case, she didn't directly reference it in any way. Yet.
"Well, I'm sure you'll find someone who has had a lot of experience with children in the past, people like that would really make good housekeepers." she said, slightly emphasizing her tone at certain points to add to the effect.

Jean just smiled. Not showing if she picked up on the hint one way or the other.

"Hun, what is it you do in Clauden? I mean I'm sure you are looking for a husband, what woman isn't, cept those already married. But I mean what are you doing tu support yourself till you settle down as a respectable homemaker?"

Sydney didn't want to offend her, but truth be told, she wasn't looking for a husband in the least. If she was, she'd probably have at least tried by now.
"Uhh... Well, I'm mostly making my living as a writer, and I don't plan on ever stopping. I live in a cabin that somehow has... Animated corpses inside of it. Well, under it, really, but that's not the point. I just want to finish my book and get out of this damn town. I only moved here because I heard the place was creepy, but I didn't know it was... Dangerous." she said, and let out a breath. She pushed her glasses up closer to her eyes, and let out a weak smile.
"Sorry, I'm ranting. Either way, in life I only want to finish my series before I die. Nothing more, nothing less."

"Oh I see," Jean said blank faced, "Maybe you should go see a doctor. They have all kinds of remedies for lethargy."

Jean tried to quickly chnag the subject, "Do you want to go shopping for baby stuff? We could go down to the business district. I know you probably want to get back to journaling, but you'll have plenty of time."
