Ray shook his head.

"I wouldn't worry too much about kids, I know drunk Ray isn't that free with himself ma'am. And me and kids don't mix, so don't think you have a chance with smart Ray", he explained matter-of-factly

"Well whether you are smart Ray or drunk Ray it doesn't matter. Passionate Ray has already had his way with me, on our wedding night,so kids could be a very real option. Who knows I could already be carrying our child," she said smugly.

Ray shook his head again. No such thing as "passion ray". Not for a long, long time...

"Nice try.", he said, "There hasn't been a passionate Ray since..."

He caught himself. That part of his life was long dead. He hoped Emma would let the subject die.

"Let us wait and see. You were the one with amnesia, I remember exactly what happened, and I say a baby is possible," she shouted as she shoved him.

Ray backed off. He was sure that couldn't of happened. He knew himself well enough. But his free-ride seemed to be nearing the end of the line, and some bad memories were coming back.

"I think I should go for a while", he said, "You look like you need some time to calm down."

That was the last straw for Emma, she burst into tears and ran into her bedroom. She lay across the bed, her body heaved as she gave into the luxury of sobbing her heart out.
"How could he be so cruel,to deny something so beautiful," she whispered to herself. Automatically her hand went to her stomach ,her fingers splayed out. Something precious could be growing inside her now,yet he was so full of denial,so afraid. Her tears continued to run down her face, as she thought about what could be if only Ray would let it happen.

Ray sighed. Neverending drama in his life. He wondered if he should just leave. But he had enough compassion to stay around for now. He just wouldn't say or do anything. That sounded good. He really hoped someone would just show up and give him work.

Emma waited and listened for the inevitable banging of the door as Ray left her. It didn't happen, she stopped crying. Maybe there was hope for her relationship with Ray. She grabbed her robe and walked to the bathroom. She stripped off her clothes, and put on the robe. She untied her hair, letting the long curvy strands fall loosely down her back. Emma washed her face clean, and then walked back into the parlour, glad to see Ray still there. She sat on the lounge next to him, and took hold of his hands.
"I am sorry, Ray. Can you forgive me?" she asked looking up at him hopefully.

"I guess", Ray said, "Just no more of this looping out stuff while I'm here okay?"

He was relieved, she finally seemed to have some sanity. Still, he wasn't sure about staying. He had the feeling he was getting himself in deeper trouble here.

Ray got up. He didn't really feel like being around the house anymore. He thought about going to steal something. Nah... he would wait for now. He went out back, to the wood pile he had stole before. The day had gone by. It was dark. The stars were out. The air was cold. His breath sent out clouds of mist. He sat down on the wood pile. This was nice. He wasn't hungover, or drunk, and he wasn't craving any liquor yet. A nice balance.

Emma watched Ray as he walked outside, and felt ashamed of herself. She used to be a nice person, not the cold calculating manipulator she was today. Somewhere in her brain, she knew the marriage was a sham, that no actual ceremony had taken place. But Emma yearned for love so much, and had finally met someone that was able to crack through her icy veneer and make her feel alive again.
Emma returned to her room and dressed in one of her prettiest gowns, instead of pinning up her hair in the usual severe bun, she brushed her long wavy hair until it shone. She applied some lip colouring, picked up her reticule and reached under her pillow, for her trusty pistol and placed it in her pocket.
She then wrote a short note for Ray and put it on the kitchen table, before rushing out of the house and walking briskly towards Clauden.

“I have gone in to town, will be back later. Love Emma”

Ray didn't feel like going anywhere. He sat down with his book again, took an apple from the fruit basket, and read in front of the fire. He realized he was still wearing Emma's gown. He went outside to wash his old clothes.

Emma was halfway up the street when she turned around and saw Ray in her frilly dressing gown hanging out his washing. He was almost domesticated, she just had to teach him to cook . Emma smiled and kept walking into Clauden, happy with her life.

Ray was relieved that Emma was finally gone. He needed to rest. Just as soon as his clothes were dry he could have a nap. That would be nice...

Just then came a rustling sound came from a nearby bush. Ray looked over. A fairly average sized dog emerged. The dog had no tags, or anything to signify it belonged to anyway.

"Hey there boy!", Ray said.

The dog growled.

"Oh...", Ray realized the dog might not be friendly. He was trying to decide if he should run away when the dog lunged at him. He ducked out of the way, sending the angry canine into his clothes hanging on the line.

The dog still bit into it's target, in this case, Ray's pants hanging on the line.

The dog landed nicely and turned around to look at Ray. He was sure he saw a mischievous glint in the dog's eyes. Then, without warning, the pooch set off at full tilt sprint onto the road, sending up a plume of dust where it had been standing.

"DAMN IT!!!", Ray shouted, not using his indoor voice at all. He tried to run off after the animal but tripped on the folds of his dress and fell face first into the washing bucket.

"Ow!", he screamed, soapy water immediately filling his eyes. He scrambled onto his feet, wooden bucket still on his head, and set off running after the dog, holding the folds of the dress up to keep himself from tripping. He couldn't see where he was going but he made it out onto the road and was heading in the general direction of the dog.

"COME BACK WITH MY PANTS YOU STUPID MUTT!", he screamed as he passed Emma on the road.
