Emma smiled as she watched Ray run past her with the bucket on his head, at least he had the good sense to hold up her robe as he ran after the dog.

"Ray, stand still, wait for me,"she yelled after him.

Ray couldn't hear Emma through his bucket so he just kept on running. He could only see the ground below him but he could hear the dog. He was almost there... Then he tripped on a rock and went bucket over heels onto the ground. He pulled himself up and started running again, unaware that he was now running in the wrong direction.

Her husband really was an idiot, she wondered if his middle name was Homer. Emma acting on instincts did the humane thing. She stuck her foot out, as Ray came alongside her. If he was going to ignore he calling him, she would have to get physical with him.

Ray tripped and landed on Emma. He mistook her for the dog and said, "Drop it, bad dog!", not letting her move.

Emma had to think whether she was that desperate for a husband. Her pistol lay in her pocket, she could shoot him right now and say that he was a crazed transvestite stealing her clothes. She looked him over prepared to shoot, but he had such a sweet face, and he had helped her, and most women did end up marrying stupid men,it was a fact of life. Emma decided not to shoot, instead she dug her teeth into his arm before standing up. She brushed the dirt off her gown, and looked down at the man laying at her feet dressed in her lacy robe.

"No! Bad dog!", he got up and started running, this time towards the direction the dog had gone.

"You better not be rabid you stupid mutt!", he shouted

Emma watched Ray run after the dog, her fingers were itchy ready to shoot, but she decided maybe a strong drink was what she really needed to handle the crossdressing dog chaser. She walked off in the direction of the tavern.

Ray kept running in pursuit of the mangy mongrel that had stolen his pants. Suddenly he heard growling not to far away. He turned around, pointlessly of course as he was still wearing his bucket. But he still got the message.

"Uuuh... good dog?", he said tentatively

The dog pounced on him, knocking him to the ground. It spit out his pants and tore away the dress. The dog appeared to have completed his goal and ran away. Ray stood up and pulled off the bucket, just about breaking his neck in the process. He examined his surroundings. He appeared to be in some kind of farmers field. There were confused looking cows grazing around him and a very confused milk maid staring at him. Ray shuffled over so he was obscured by a cow.

"Um. I'm just gonna go now.", he said, picking up his tattered pants. They fell apart in his hand.

"Uh.", he said, "Um... yeah..."

"Buy milk?", the milkmaid asked in an extremely heavy German accent.

"No... uh... can I buy that burlap sack?", Ray said, indicating a burlap sack laying nearby.

"Ya is very good sack!"

"How much?"

"20 dollars!", she said cheerfully

Ray reached into his tattered pocket, paid the happy maid, put on his burlap sack over his underwear and went to the tavern to get the rest of his clothes and some beer, and some gin, and maybe some whiskey.

Emma lay on the ground, blood oozing from her cuts. Suddenly she felt as if her body was floating in the air,she closed her eyes and waited for the light to come. Instead she heard a voice strangely like her own yelling at her.

"What you up to girl, you don't need a man. You are smart and intelligent. A dog is better company than a man. Now get up off that dirty ground and pull yourself together."

Emma felt wetness on her cheeks, was she crying? She opened her eyes to see that big straggly mutt's huge tongue, licking her face.

The broken windows were a concern, but she would deal with them in the morning. The bright full moon, passed behind a cloud and for the first time in her life, Emma felt afraid. She started to shiver,as a sense of dread fell on her. Her hand moved to cover the silver cross, she wore around her neck.

"Enough," she said laughingly as she struggled off the ground.

Emma went inside and fetched a bowl of food for her new friend, before returning inside to patch herself up.

Timothy carefully peered through the house's dust-stained window, dead leaves and twigs covering the sill as a light breeze blew through the field. Crouching in the darkness, he watched the girl inside bent over in the corner of the room, evidently watering the large, slobbering dog that anxiously paced back and forth beside her. Within his gloved, quivering fist was a steel knife sheltered. A mosquito gently drifted down upon the observer's nose, the parasite deftly drawing blood from its chosen port of entry until its middlesection was but an immensity of dark-red. If Timothy noticed, he gave no indication.

A string of ears, shrunken and charred black, hung from the side of his jeans. Dark-brown stains adorned the material, the blue no longer blue but tan, brown, black and red. His eyes were focused and at the same time unspecificated, almost glazed over. Timothy was contemplating a robbery. Possibly more.

The sizeless abysses of his pupils trailed after the young woman, like starving wolves carefully yet anxiously stalking their prey. The young old man was in the stomach of poverty. He always was, since from his gate he emerged. Funds went as they came. Such was the life of an outlaw, and as such the life of Timothy McGraugh.

As the woman finished watering the dog, a concentrated clutter of dust carried through the wind, finding its home in the man's throat. McGraugh winced, before purging the intruder with a dry cough. Spitting a globule of phlegm out, Timothy vaguely realized that the woman probably heard him. But he didn't care. Within his gloved, quivering fist was a steel knife sheltered.

Emma had settled her nerves, by doing mundane chores around the house. Her companion was strangely comforting and she had just consoled herself to the point where she was feeling relaxed and safe. Then she heard it. A cough outside her window. She froze at the sound, paralyzed with a deep fear.

Timothy cocked his head to the side, his gaze fixed upon the woman, her slight frame suddenly still... her face whitened, illuminated by the glowing lantern. The hound jumped to attention. Action was necessary.

The observer lowered himself nearly to a crawl, silently gliding to the small building's door. A moment of observation, a discovery, and the threshold was barred by a number of boards and farming utensils. The door was immobile. But for the windows and the chimney, the idea of exit was an invalid. Entrance, however, was not.

Timothy, however, wanted for the cover of dark before intrusion. Sidling back to the window, through which the girl could still be seen in a state of grave fear, a .357 was drawn. His arm raised, his eye focused, the cold blue barrel found itself facing the lantern. The hammer was pulled back with a click. Timothy's finger curled around the weapon's trigger... and with a sudden decisive movement, squeezed.

An explosion of fire and glass erupted. The lantern was no more, the window still intact but for a small rupture. The room was engulfed in darkness. Sparing no time, Timothy immediately holstered the revolver, stood, and climbed onto the building's roof. Not bothering to hide his steps, each footfall boomed through the almost airtight room. The observer made his way towards the chimney.

Emma screamed as the lantern was shot out. Now she knew someone was out there, and it wasn't Raymond. She crouched down low behind the couch and felt in her corset for her trusty pistol, reassured by the cold hard steel. The dog had followed her behind the couch, his warm body huddled close to hers.
