« Thread started on: Jul 26th, 2009, 7:16pm »

[[I could not tell if there was a confirmation process. If there is please let me know and I will fix it and we're sorry.]]

Senka, as a rule, did not drink. It was one of the tenants of her religion which she held onto, almost at random. She wondered, as she inspected the glass of vaguely clean water in front of her, why she held onto this particular one. It would be nice to get really, deeply, and thoroughly drunk. On the other hand there was something important about being clean, now. Everything seemed very gritty all of a sudden. Maybe that was just the sand. She wiggled her toes in her boots and could almost hear the crunch. Her shirt was pressed. Her dark coat was clean. She had even managed to keep her light pants clear of dirt. And yet it creeped in. It sneaked into her boots and socks and fingernails. All the passion was gone from the world and there was sand in her boots.

She raised a hand. “Actually,” the bar keep looked up, “give me one of…what is that? Um nevermind. Give me some of that. Thank you.”

The glass appeared in front of her and she glared at it. She would make a bed behind the tavern tonight. Tomorrow she would go and find another ranch that needed a hand for the next season. She enjoyed working with the animals. They needed very little. Their goals were gloriously simple. She could make them happy; give them their hearts desires with a handful of grass. She would like that. But first thing’s first. She lifted the glass. She carefully set it back down. She took another drink of water. She’d build up the courage eventually.

The barkeep managed to deftly serve the lady's drink one handed, which turned out to be a useful skill because the other hand was busy being grabbed at the wrist by a smaller, sharper hand. This was, in turn, linked by an unfortunate sort of arm to a person leaning over the bar.
Swathed in a largely featureless black coat, the messy tavern light picked out grass stains, burns and dust impurities enough to disfigure a dozen coats. A tall white collar bound with short knots scrawled up his neck, covering a heavy adams' apple.
His eyes were something wild. Mossy coloured in the dim light, they still shone out from a mop of copper hair.
The barkeep gave up his otherwise noble attempt to ignore the hand and looked over at him, hunched across the bar as he was and grinning.

"Hey, keeps. I got a question for you. Got somethin' for you if you know"

The barkeep's response was quiet, half-mouthed, impossible over the bar's mutter.

"Won't deal!"
The man spun, treating his most immediate bar-comrade to a mouthful of mismatched yellowing teeth and the benefit of his profound voice. Selecting Senka, he carried on:

"I bet you know. This gold nugget i' you can tell me to whom that old ranch out sou'west a day's walk belongs. I needsta talk at them but ain't no one there."

Senka looked very seriously at her drink. She didn’t bother to look up at the man. Her scruffy hair fell into her eyes and striped the bar like a tiger.

“Keep your nugget.” She said softly, politely. She was slowly counting down in her head. Three. Two. One. She tipped the drink back. It gave a fight down her throat and somewhere in her gut. She almost dropped the glass coughing. Maybe there was ground glass in the cup afterall. After she was sure she was not going to die immediately she answered.

“You won’t find anyone on that farm anyway.” She rasped. “End of June they’re not back from the drive yet.” Oh right. Not everyone knew what that meant. “They drive cattle up north. Usually means they leave folks behind, but Charles runs a small operation. Place shuts down till September.”

She pushed the glass meaningfully forward. She wasn’t sure how this getting drunk thing went, but she was absolutely certain it involved multiple glasses. The bartender filled it dutifully. She pulled it back and faced it like an enemy.

"Esh? Well I need inn'ere cellar."

The slant figure rocked back enough, leaning on the bar to show off his gaunt physique under his narrow coat. The same glance revealed the rings around his bright eyes and the nervous twitching of the bony hand still on the bar.

When he spoke again, it was lower, more conspiratorial. Almost hoarse. As he leaned in to deliver, his odd, tropical smell, a mixture of fruit and mold and the spice trade filled the area around him. Light from the oil lamps glinted oddly around the brim of his forage cap.

"Know anything about lockpicking, lady? Good money in there and you'd be doin'em a favor. They don't want what they've got and I do."

Senka emptied the next glass like the villain it was, banging it on the counter top and coughing up a storm. She took a moment to breathe and glanced up. It was the scent that did it. He didn’t smell like the other people she’d met lately. Maybe it was the spice, or the journey he had taken. Maybe it was the fact that he had, honest to god, horns sticking out of his head. There was something different about him. However, she found the rest of his appearance somewhat lacking. He was just another floater. Still, her interest was piqued by…whatever it was about him, even through the slowly growing fog of alcohol between her brain and the barn.

“Yes.” She said, as if pronouncing the word was tricky. Her eyes were a soft hazel color, and thin. She looked as if she was squinting at him, or glaring over her rusty freckles. Likely glaring from the set of her jaw. “I can pick most locks in under two minutes, though the new Jackson models still give me some trouble. There’s a catch to the last gear. It’s rather sticky you have to…. In any case, yes, but I don’t think I can break into a frien…the farm of someone I know. What is it you need? I’m sorry, what was your name?”

(Hope its ok that I rp with you guys smiley )

D walked into the tavern quiet as every but it never worked for him to come in unnoticed. There was something always about walking into a tavern that the regulars knew when someone or anything was about to walk in. The whole room looked at D and started gossiping about him. D's hearing was excellent even without a vampire and could hear the whispers about him. Some said "Whos that guy?" "Look at the sword on his back? Whats he going to do kill us all?" Among others things said.

D continued walking through the tavern to the bar next to the girl. Not even paying attention to her he ordered a bloody marry and winked at the Bartender. He smiled and went into the back to get him his special drink. He came back a few seconds later with a bloody marry but it wasnt a real bloody marry it was blood. D had tipped off the bartender to supply him with blood if he paid a monthly fee and he agreed. D had only been in town for a few days and was already making connections. He sniiffed the air and frowned as he smelled the spice of the man and the mold.

Drinking the bloody marry D felt like new again. He only needed blood every once and awhile being a Dampil he was half vampire and didnt need to feed regularly like Full vampires.

Travis had been standing oustside of the tavern chewing the fat with Belle and Fran when he was D walk into the tavern.

Being a curious young lad, he of course followed D into the bar.

"Where are ya from mister?" Travis said to D. "Seems like I might have saw you once before or something around here. Say? Is that tomato juice any good here? I have a mom and pa. My pa is the sheriff but I can't seem to find him no more. Say mister, have you seen my pa Clay Hallow on yar travels?"

Then he said the one name he never expected Clay hallow.

"Your the son of Clay Hallow? I never expected Clay to have a child. But then again this town is full of mysteries and un told secrets. Tell me whats your name? Another thing what do you mean you cant find him anymore? Isnt he around here somewhere in town?" D asked the child.

D set down his drink and looked at the young boy.

Travis smiled at the man.

"My name is Travis. My ma named me after my third uncle on my pa's side. His name was Travis too."

Travis looked outside to make sure Belle still had Goop.

"Well I went to Belle's house for a while." Travis pointed outside. "That lady over there is Belle, That other lady is Fran. She is hellister's cousin."

"Anyway Mister I was at Belle's house for months and then I come home and I can't find my ma or pa so now mostly I just wander around. I do miss them sorely though," Travis said.

"Well its nice to meet you Travis. My name is D"

D looked at the boy with a quizzical look.

"Really why were you away from home for so long?" D asked while looking at the other two females outside the tavern.

"If you want I think I may be able to help you find them. That is if you want my help. Im sorry you miss them so being away from your parents for so long can be a hard thing." D said.

D looked at the boy and could see the sadness in his eyes of how he missed his parents. D hoped that helping him find his parents would give the child some peace and reunite the family let alone bring back the sheriff. Which was very odd being as people should have noticed he was missing.

"So what say you Travis? Do you want my help?" D asked.

He hunkered down lower against the bar, fingers still beating a nervous tattoo against the pitted surface. His eyes made another circuit of the low room, his breathing picked up. He crammed the forage cap harder onto his head, squishing it against his bright hair as is to make himself smaller. His voice picked up a hesitant cadence, a strange counterpoint to it's manic rapidity.

"Friends, wuz it? Good, esh."

He held one hand forward to show a tawdry, calloused palm, dropped his voice into an inclusive whisper and winked.

His other had vanished somewhere nameless in the volume of his shapeless coat, found a few grimy coins and managed to indicate a local stillwork grain alcohol in one fairly expressive gesture. A stunned barkeep poured a drink.

"What if I sez there's a thing innere without even a name? A dozen feet long, right, wi' claws and fangs and fings?"

He paused, so as to convey the enormity of fings. He took the moment to suckle at the grime-rimmed glass and then set it down to tap his palm with one long, dirt-nailed digit.

"They don't want to come home to that. You pick the lock, I'll get rid of it."

A pause, a drink. A hearty cough and extended snort.

"Name's Silas. 'm a trapper."

“If you told me that, I’d say you’re mad, but since it a hypothetical, I guess I don’t have to.”
The bartender leaned toward her, a polite offer to refill the terrible glass. She waved him away with a small smile. No. No. This was all getting too strange for her. She certainly didn’t need to enhance it. She leaned almost unconsciously away from the newly arrived man beside her. There was something off about him; a confidence in his movement and stride that, in her experience, usually belonged to someone who was very, very good at hurting people. She was glad when he seemed distracted.

Despite the very logical brain telling her this man was clearly out of his head, she had been trained for most of her life that the maddest people often contain the most passion. Regardless of where her journey had taken her, it was still her foundation. She bent closer. “I’m Senka, a Follower.” She squinted at him. Perhaps this was a way out her stagnation, if even for a moment. It was worth the question in any case. “Why is this so important to you?”

Silas didn't let the word hang but he jumped on it, replying almost before Senka was done speaking.

"Professional pride, see. You see it, esh? You's a follower. I follows beasties."
This, followed with a sage nod, an intake of breath, and another low volume screed.

"You can't half track this thing, see. Smells like nothin' and moves like wind. I'm as sure as all blazes it's innere. Cornered."

Looking around again, the whites on the edges of his eyes got bigger, pupils dilating in a kind of nervous elation. His other hand visited nowhere against and then flashed out, all grimy knuckles and sallow skin, to deposit something in his flat palm, even as he moved his shoulders to shield it.

"Look h', miss."
In the center of his palm, shining dully in the tavern lights, was a reptilian scale, ovoid, easily four inches across. Glossy black and sharp as anything, it was patterned with small golden waves. Unmistakably, a rattlesnake scale. Silas prodded it with the other hand a few times for emphasis, holding it closer to Senka and grinning the same maligned grin.

Professional pride, eh? Well, pride was one of those funny things that could drive a man to levels of courage or infamy beyond normal consideration. Like Love or, she glanced at the empty glass in front of her, alcohol for that matter. She could understand Professional Pride, however. Clearly this man was a creature very much like herself, tied to a code and empowered by it.

Senka leaned over his hand and raised her eyebrows. Slowly, she raised her eyes to his face, but no. He didn’t seem to be kidding. “Well, would you look at that.” She said carefully. She leaned back and inspected the man before her. “Say I believe that little piece of shine is real. I have to ask myself, Mr Silas, what kind of man gets excited about cornering something like that?”

Silas dropped the scale`1 on the bar, letting it sit moodily in a pool of something which dulled the finish. He snickered.

"Not a mister. 'd be Mr. Peller, which is another story. Silas will do:
Professional pride. Man gets excited 'bout a thing like that when it's a thing he's not seen."

Silas' fingers beat furiously on the dented bar, over and over. He brushed his copper hair under his woolen cap and tipped the cap up to show one awl-bright eye, flashing back and forth. His shoulders hunched, like a coyote in a corner.

"This's kinda find which makes a person a legend. I bet there's a dozen in here who'd smash more'n a cellar door to find it, I ain't even lookin' to break the lock."
