Silas pointed one dusty knuckle at the bestingered monstrosity.

"Is wha?"

Silas hacked up another vital organ and slumped against the turf while he waited for Senka to do a cursory limb count and return with an estimated genus.

If he felt disappointed, it wasn't in his aspect. If he felt put out, he wasn't focusing on it. He cast around the skyline. There, a low hill; there, grumbling mill. It would equate the mill with folk- Avoid. The hill'd be baking hot, devoid of game. Strike the river below the mill, follow the driver's trail to stay inconspicuous.

This wasn't a short-term game, this was a devotion: An act of sacrifice.

Besides, it'd been in such a hurry it left behind a feather.

If anything put Silas off, it was his hat. In the wan moonlight his copper locks were dull with dust where he'd rubbed the shy-spot on his head, looking for his forage cap, time and again, his horns ruefully exposed and glinting.

The fluffy monster made a swing at Senka’s hand with the sharp bit of his tail. She tapped her roughly on the beak. The pup looked at her with something, to her great surprise, like shame.

“No. Bad girl.” Senka said affectionately. Even as she said it she realized it was completely out of character, not to mention inappropriate. She couldn’t possibly love this tiny ball of terror. The tiny ball of terror cooed and bounced. Oh lord.

She squatted and set the thing on the dust. She plopped it down between her knees, where it promptly somersaulted onto its stomach. “Looks vaguely like a griffon, except the talons are on the wrong and, and of course, there’s the tail.” The thing made another pass at Senka’s dangling hand. “No.” She swatted her beak again.

“Whatever she is,” She said ruefully, “she’s mine now.” She fished an inside pocket and removed a sticky and slightly wet piece of jerky. She offered it to the infant monster, who devoured it with much snapping and growling. “What do you think, Verochka? Better than hands right?”

She watched Silas’ discomfort for a moment in silence, moving her hand out of reach of a beak from time to time. Silently, she reached around her back where her hat dangled from the string around her neck. She lifted it off and tossed it toward him. It didn’t’ fit her anyway. She’d swiped it off a particularly dense grunt about a year before. Fit or not, it was too nice a hat for him.

“So what’s your next move?”

Silas balked a moment, considering the prospect of letting a shred of the Beasts' progeny walk away so easy. On the one hand, it'd never be easier to 'snuff and letting it walk as a disservice to free people everywhere.
On the other hand, there but for a horrible insectoid tail would be Silas. Live and let exist unnaturally, he supposed, sucking idly on one of his signed hands.

" 'unno. He's gone off to the water. He'll get 'ere and leave trackless innit. I could follow it but there's all of nothin' ou' here, ah? He'll be bac' up the river 'fer long. 'oo knows how many of his brood be about now? Bes' thing I can do is go seekin'em. Meb' your frien' could help?"

Senka carefully put a hand down to biting height. Vera continued to attack the stringy piece of meat. She didn’t attempt dismemberment. Senka smiled. She placed her fingers, gently, on the spot where the fluffy down faded to yellow fur. Still nothing. Maybe there was hope afterall. Gently, she brushed her back. The black, glossy tail curled. Senka decided to believe that meant she liked it.

“She’s just a pup, but maybe there’s potential here.” Something occurred to her, perhaps a moment too late. “You wouldn’t mind working with her?” One thing she noticed about people who were, well, normal, is that they seemed to hold grudges against things which attempted to eat them. Honestly, it was just easier overall to forgive and forget, teeth and claws or not.

"On 'ee balance, sh' got the decency to show us her stinger, which half of people don't. Mebe' 's why I spend so much time lookin' fae it."

Silas shrugged catatonically, coat flapping off knob shoulders. He wondered in a small, temporary way if this was why he chased so ardently. The honesty of it: The plainness of shape. Of course, he argued to himself that's most logically attributed to a pair of unwanted horns.

"Whatchee namin' 'er?

"Verochka." Senka answered. "Means faith."
