Wesley didn't cry immediately. He made it all the way to the doors of the church before it all set in.
Now, he was more alone than ever.

Once inside, he walked to the front, then collapsed pitifully onto the floor, leaning against the seat of a pew.
It was then that he broke down. Once the tears started to fall, he didn't know how to stop them.

When did it all start going wrong? he asked himself. He was positioned in a way so that he was able to rest his head on his crossed arms and stare at the ground.
It's my fault. Anything we might have had, I destroyed. I didn't deserve her anyway.

Jamie had seen Wesley walk into the church as he was on his way back to the house. There was something in his presence that bothered him, so he followed.
"You don't look so good," he said as he walked in. He pulled a bottle opener from one of his pockets and uncorked a bottle of strong whiskey that he had just recently purchased before walking up and sitting next to his new acquaintance.
"Hey, I actually bought this for something, but it looks like you might need it." he said, offering him the bottle.

"You don't look so good."

When Wesley didn't recognize the voice as soon as he heard it, he forced himself to partially look up.

Oh. Jamie.

He thought about whether or not he wanted Jamie there. He only felt indifferent to most anything at the moment.

"Hey, I actually bought this for something, but it looks like you might need it,"

"I... I don't drink," Wesley said quietly.

"Yeah? Well, you do now," Jamie said persistently.
"It will make you feel better. Do you want to talk about it? What you're crying over. I know you hardly know me, but maybe that will make it easier."

"It will make you feel better."

Wesley didn't doubt that. Oh well, he had nothing to lose. He took a drink, taking in as much as he could.

"My fiance just broke off the engagement," he said weakly, opening his hand to show Jamie the ring.
"My fault. Completely. I left for too long."

The whiskey took effect quickly due to his low tolerance. He took another drink before continuing,
"I shouldn't have even expected anything different. I was only fooling myself. I've never had any good luck," he said, coughing. "My parents were too damn drunk to be capable of anything besides neglect. My ex-wife left me for another man. Everyone hated my articles. I had practically no money when I left New York. Marie's new husband beat her to death. Some pyromaniac burnt my office here down. My aunt, one of the very few people who ever cared, is dead. I have no job. I have no home. I have two, maybe three, friends. I'm obsessive compulsive, paranoid and antisocial... And Alex... Alex... she was the only one who ever accepted it. I love her so much."

The tears had momentarily stopped, but now he could feel them starting up again, worse than before.

"What can I do, Jamie? What the hell can I do? My life hardly even matters!"

Jamie said nothing. He had sort of expected a stupid answer, like he had stepped on an ant or something.
He had been hanging around Larghetto too long.
"Well, Wesley, there are a lot of things that you can do," he said, taking back the bottle and taking a drink out of it himself without really thinking about it.
"You have been through a lot, and you have made it through all of that. I realize, though, that there is only so much that one person can take. So now, you can just take whatever crap life gives you and make the most of it, you can sulk and be depressed for the rest of your time, or you can just end it all completely. Those are the things that I would not recommend doing.
What I would recommend doing is getting over it. I know you've done this before, so I know that you know that it will be difficult. If you let this girl ruin your life, you're only showing her how much power she has over you.
Maybe you'll get over it. You got over your ex-wife, didn't you? You got over her enough to have the capacity to love someone else, anyway.
But maybe you'll always love her, and that happens, too. She might find someone else, and it's going to hurt when you see her with him. Badly.
So this is only my take, but I think you should forget her if you can. There's no point in letting her force you out of town, but maybe you can be the way you were before you met her. Hey, even if that was bad, at least it's one less thing to mark down.
As for your career, home, etcedera, Larghetto and I will be obliged to help if you ever need it.
Is this making any sense at all? I think I might just be rambling. Anyway, that's my two cents."
Upon conclusion, he located a cigarette and lit it. This habit was really starting to control him.

Wesley was as respectfully silent as he could be during Jamie's "speech".
Yeah, that all makes sense. he thought. He wished it didn't.

"But I don't want to forget her!" Wesley said, taking the bottle back almost forcefully as he shifted into the anger stage of grief. He unsuccesfully attempted to drink all that was left.
This wasn't the first time, he remembered, he had tried to drink away his problems.
"I want everything to be like it was. Why did this happen, Jamie? Why? She promised me that she would always be here for me. She was sitting right there, and I was sitting right there!"

He motioned without clarity to two places in the church. He was obviously quite drunk now.

"I hate this! It was my fault! She didn't say, but I know it was. She would have given me a reason if it was anything different." Wesley sighed and stared at the ground. "It can't be like it was, though. Ever again. Even if she was to welcome me back. It's over. I knew it before I even came back. I should have never come back. I'll just leave. No one will even know that I'm gone."

Alex finally made it to the church. She was sure that this would be where Wesley was. If she knew him, and she did know him quite well... he would be near the spot where... the spot where she had promised to always be there for him. It was the only promise that she had failed to keep in a long time. Alex stopped as she heard only a part of the conversation.

"It can't be like it was, though. Ever again. Even if she was to welcome me back. It's over. I knew it before I even came back. I should have never come back. I'll just leave. No one will even know that I'm gone."

The statement made Alexandrea freeze in place with a small intake of air. 'He's going to leave again?' Alex thought grimly to herself. That wasn't what she had wanted. Why couldn't she just tell him that she was a vampire and get it over with. She couldn't say anything... only stand there with her moth slightly parted.

Of course everything that Wesley was saying had occurred to her before she had broken it off, but hearing it from him made her feel the strongest guilt. No, what was done was done. She couldn't risk putting him in danger. Besides... Alex had broken his heart... he probably wouldn't take her back.

Alex leaned against the door, trying to catch her breath, not that she needed to. There were still some pesky human habits. But Alex didn't believe that love was just for humans. Couldn't she still love Wesley as a vampire?

"But that's not true at all. For one thing, you just told me. Secondly, Larghetto and Fermata would definitely know considering that you just told them that you were staying in their house. And I'm sure what's-her-face would know too. If you want to leave, then no one is going to stop you, but I'm not sure that is the best choice. As I said, you shouldn't let something as one failed relationship run you out of town," Jamie replied.
"Wesley, you've had a lot to drink, and that stuff is quite strong, even for me. If you were to drink yourself to death tonight, then I'd feel all guilty and everything and I'd probably lose a lot of sleep over it. As a friend, I'm going to ask you to go home and sleep it off."
He had heard something behind him, but had put off checking what it was until he was done speaking.
The fruit stand girl. Was that what this was about?
"Hi there," he said, wondering if he should excuse himself.

"Hi..." Alex said softly, "I, um... I didn't mean to interrupt, really, but, um..." what to say, what to say... Alex wasn't sure what she should say. "I just wanted to talk to Wesley for a little bit, but you can finish if you weren't through though, sorry." Alex rambled. She looked up with as much of a smile as she could muster for the way she felt. Actually, Alex felt like she had acted very much like Wesley had when they had first met, and he would ramble on, and always end with a sorry. Alex loved that.

"Right. I'll be right outside," Jamie said. He brought himself up off the floor, picking up the two bottles of wine that he had also purchased as well as the near-empty bottle of whiskey.
"See you at the ball," he said to Alexandrea as he walked past her, then went out the door and waited against the wall outside.

Alex watched as Jamie walked out. She nodded to him as he walked past her. With an intake of air Alex walked forward and sat next to Wesley on the pew. She didnt know if she should say sorry or whatever. Alex stared ahead. "Wes... I... I'm sorry." she said finally, "I want you to know... that under any normal circumstances... I would have taken you back with open arms, and I can say that, because I love you." She stated with a slight nod.

"But I don't want our breakup to effect our friendship." Alex said as she finally looked to him. "Wes, you're the best friend I have ever had. If you left again... I don't know what I would do." she admitted. Alex let a pause fall between her words. "One last time... would you be my date to the moonlit ball?"

Wesley was nervous now that Alexandrea was there and almost wished that Jamie hadn't walked out. Before she approached, he rubbed his eyes in an attempt to get rid of all the remaining tears before realizing they probably would still be red.

"I'm okay. I'm...I'm fine," he lied. "You didn't have to come all the way out here."

"One last time... would you be my date to the moonlit ball?"

Wesley thought about it. It seemed like it might be strange, now, and he wasn't sure if the friendship would be the same, either.
But the words "one last time" really struck him, and he found himself really wanting to accept her offer.

"I don't know, Alexandrea," he said quietly. "What I mean to say is, I don't...uh... I don't know if I can really dance right now, let alone walk in a straight line. Sorry. M-maybe you should ask someone else. I'm sure there will be a lot of people there who you would have a better time with."
Wesley hoped that she wouldn't notice his voice becoming gradually more shaky, and he forced a weak smile to assure that he was okay.

Alex bit her lip with a frown. She wasn't used to hearing him reject her that often. Of course his leaving was a form of rejection itself, but at least he wasn't saying that to her in person. "Oh, I see." She said sadly. "I don't know that what you say is true." she replied. "I hate that I did this to you, Wes. Please believe me that I will probably hate myself for the rest of my eternal life."

Whoah. She was hinting at something. That definitely was more than just a slip-up.

"Eternal life? Wha...what are you saying, Alexandrea?" Wesley said in a strange tone, looking her in the eye for the first time. He meant to wait for the answer, but he had to add something else.
"You... I... don't hate yourself. Please. You're wonderful. I'm sure... I'm sure you'll move on all right. But what are trying to say?"
