Larghetto walked out into the desert and kneeled in the dirt, squinting at the landscape. It had been a few weeks since he had seen any sign of the worms at all. He was extremely aggrieved. He took his journal out of the pocket of his brown duster and removed a pen and inkwell from the opposite, scratched down a few notes, then put them away and continued looking.
"Are there any worms out here today?" he called out.

Volupchewus heard the familiar pitter patter of soft boots inside her underground domain. Instead of blasting the ground apart and exposing herself to her prey the worm did something very uncharacteristic.

She burrowed near the top layer of soil but did not burrow far enough to expose herself.

Instead, she merely destabilized the ground in the path of her victim. Underneath the very thin layer of ground she waited, her mouth wide open like a giant Venus fly trap.

Larghetto felt something underground and instinctively took a few small steps back. He held up his hands slowly.
"I'm not sure what is being planned here."

Volupchewus's gooey mouth started salivating in anticipation of the meal.

She waited, and then waited some more for the creature to fall into her gaping mouth with rows of dagger teeth.

When nothing happened her intsincts told her to move to the surface of the desert. She crawled out slowly and her pin prick eyes peered at Larghetto in the bright sun.

Larghetto tilted his head and looked at the worm, staying a safe distance. He didn't even move.
He wondered if creatures like this could recognize people.

Volupchewus's sensory nerves fired in a way they had never done before as she neared Larghetto. The great worm was developing a depth in her brain patterns that transcended instinct. Volupchewus was feeling something that one might describe as emotion.

She tapped her mighty head up and down on the sand and gave out a soft whistle.

Larghetto stared for a moment, then smiled and slowly took a step forward.
"Do you remember me?" he asked, holding out his hands.
"Wow. This is wonderful."

Volupchewus took Larghetto's arm all the way up to the shoulder into her mouth. Her lips closed on his shoulder tightly and her tongue traced over his arm and hand. She then tugged hard, hard enough to pull a large man off his feet.

With Larghetto still firmly in her mouth she began to submerge into her underground domain which constsited of a network of tunnels. Her head now was all the way underground and Larghetto was going down the rabbit hole with her.

Larghetto hadn't been expecting this. He yelled and stuggled as he went through the dark tunnel.
"Can you please put me back? Please? Where are you taking me?"

Volupchewus continued to traverse the network of tunnels until the sunshine disappeared and only the musty world of darkness lay ahead. A root growing deep underneath the desert ground snagged Larghetto from above and pulled him out of the womr's mouth.

Volupchewus, too big to turn around in her underground lair, continued down the hole forgetting that she had something in her mouth to begin with.

Larghetto was left, suspended from above by his shirt in the darkness of the underground.

Jean, out for a walk with Sydney to get some warm dry air and sun, put up her umbrella to shield some of the harshest sunlight off of her.

"Boy sydney it sure is hot today," Jean said not paying too much attention to her foot placement.

Jean turned to see if the unkept, odd little woman was following when she stepped into the great big crater hole made by Volupchewus

Jean dropped, although not staright down but close, a good 25 feet into the tunnel. She stopped when she hit a section of the tunnel where it started to take a sahrp turn left.

"Help!," Jean shouted to Sydney.

Sydney had been following the woman, smiling and nodding where the need be, her nose deep in that little red notebook of hers. She looked up when she noticed in her peripheral vision that Jean seemed to… Fall into the ground. Huh? Her head snapped up, and when she saw what had happened, the notebook dropped straight to the ground, as did the pen. She darted over to the hole, and looked down inside at Jean. “Mrs. Hallow!” she shouted, and looked over the edge, her natural fear of heights making her stop short of the pit. “Mrs. Hallow, can you hear me?!” she shouted, cupping her hands around her mouth, directed into the pit.

"I can hear you Sydney," Jean squeeked from her hole.

From Jean's perspective sydney was glowing from being lit from above by the sun. She looked like a holy figure as the sun danced upon strands of Sydney's ukept hair.

"I'm ok Sydney," Jean said with a trembling voice, "But I don't know how to get out of this pit. I see it goes somewhere but I don't know if it leads out or not."

Sydney shuddered. It was either find a way to get Jean back up, or ask her to go into what very may well be a dangerous situation. Two choices, and the first one was her only option. “Can you see anything down there? Any places you can climb up, or somewhere I can help you get out from?” she called down.

"No, I can't see anything. But please Sydney don't leave me down hear. I can't bare to be alone, not even for you to go and get help. Please I will be so scared, don't leave Sydney You mustn't leave, you mustn't."

Jean began to cry.

She wiped the tears off and looked back up at Sydney.

"Even if you had a rope I couldn't climb up it in my condition. Please Sydney, come down here with me and we will follow this tunnel. I'm sure it leads to an easy passage out. The dirt is soft Sydney and the tunnel is slanted enough that the fall won't hurt you," Jean coughed muffling her next word, "much."
