"I'll take ya this far, but your screwed if you want to go further than this. The sand's pickin' up and if a storm blows in, I'm not drivin' through it. Got it!"

A dirty, beaten wagon bounced its way over the dunes of the Noory Desert. A fast, greasy man with a cigar in his mouth sat in the drivers side of the cab. A man named Holden filled the passenger seat, fiddling with his notebook and pen.

The wagon bounced hard on a rock and rolled to a stop. The Fat man moved his cigar to the left of his mouth.

"I'll let you out here."

"This isn't even close, the site's at least twenty miles from here."

"That doesn't mean nothin' to me. Weird stuff happens up there and I ain't havin' no crazy-lookin' fiend jumpin' out at me. Now the road to the old depot is right over there. You follow that and you should come right to it."

"Your genorosity knows no bounds."

"Cut the wiseguy routine. You still owe me fifty for the ride."

"You'll get it when you pick me up in the morning."

"Yeah, that'll happen."

The Fat man turned his wagon around and drove off, leaving Holden by the side of a deserted road. An wind blown sign nearby proclaimed that the Clauden Army Depot was still miles away.

Holden checked his notebook one more time and started down the dust choked road. He had been told that strange things had been sighted in the area around the depot. This interested Holden more than anything else in Clauden, which seemed to him a very sleepy town. Holden wanted proof of the paranormal, that things did go bump in the night. So far, he'd had little luck.

However, something gave him the feeling that his luck might just turn around on this little expedition.

Alexandrea Fontain had decided to take a walk to the desert. She never went there often, nor did she think about it often. It was part of Clauden that was still a mystery to her. Alex knew of the giant worms and such that were rumored to be living in the desert, but she had never seen for herself.

Suddenly a wagon sped by her stirring up plenty of dust. She coughed and waved a hand in front of her face. Naturally she stopped and closed her eyes until the dust cleared. Once she thought it safe to breath alex lifted her head and looked to the sky while drawing in a deep breath.

Alex shook her head and continued down the road. Further up she saw a man, but she didn't recognise him. If there was one lesson that Clauden taught her, it was: Be wary of strangers.

But she couldn't help but wonder who it was. What was he here for? Was he going to Clauden? Did he want to go to Clauden? There were many unanswered questions.

in the waning light of day, Holden could make out a person behind him.

"Odd", he thought.

He hadn't figured on others being this far out in the Noory and the desert did have its reputation as a dangerous place.

"Who goes there? Don't try anything funny, I'm armed."

Holden didn't have a gun. He'd hoped that he wouldn't need one. Now he feared that his assumption just might kill him.

Alex narrowed her eyes as she heard someone in front of her speak. Even though he greeted her with a bit of hostility... she paid it no mind. "Oh, I shouldn't think you would need a gun." she said with a smile. "I am but the humble owner of a fruit stand in the market." she said with a slight bow.

As Alex got a bit closer her head tilted to the right as she held out her hand for him to shake. "I'm Alexandrea Fontain. May I ask your name?"

That was Alex. A people person. She didn't have it in her to be rude or mean to anyone. But of course she wasn't going to let on that she was part vampire. That would be her little secret for the time being. As her dark eys looked over his features, her smile never faltered.

When the figure came into Holden's view, he relaxed considerably. The figure was a young woman from Clauden, Holden rembered seeing her stand when he first entered town.

Holden's face reddened slightly, he felt embaressed that he had jumped to conclusions so quickly.

"Sorry about that, Ms. Fontain," said Holden, taking Alex's hand.

"All those stories I got fed in town must be getting to me. My name is Holden West. I'm a...journalist."

When Alexandrea saw his face redden she released his hand, not wanting to ocme off too flirtatious. "Nice to meet you Mr. West." she paused. West. West. She had heard that last name before. Finally, it struck here. "West, huh? There was a detective in Clauden named Elaina West... but she passed away." she paused and lifted an eyebrow in thought, "Of course she's a ghost now, but that's a story for another time."

Alex chuckled softly, "I'm not surprised that some of the people in town told you some stories. Clauden is a strange place, Mr. West. Never seen a place like it." she admitted with a smile. "No one ever leaves once they come." 'Except my fiance...' she though to herself warily.

Holden smiled slightly. Clauden was already sounding more and more like the perfect place for him. Once you come to Clauden, you never leave. Perhaps Holden would prove Alexandrea right.

"Elaina West, hmmm. I'm not sure if she's part of my family. Then again, I've lost touch with most of my extened family. I'll ook into it once i get back to town. In the mean time, I should get going. I'm going to the abandoned Clauden Army Depot. Seems to be a great many strnage things going on there."

When Holden said something about strange things at the Army Depot, she got the feeling that he wasn't just a journalist... if he was one at all. Alexandrea didn't want Clauden to be made out as some sort of freak town, but that was what it was.

There were the works from vampires to warewolves to ghosts and giant worms. There had been many disappearances, deaths, arsony, and even blackmail to a small degree. Alex frowned slightly.

"Mr. Holden, if you don't mind me saying..." She started off softly, "Clauden is a breeding ground for strange. " she paused trying to put it better than that. "Let's just say... whe you're new here... the 'strange' seems to follow you around everywhere." She raised her head to look him in the eye, "Sometimes it still does after you're here a while." When Alexandrea said the word strange she lifted her fingers to air quote it.

She uneasily crossed her arms over her stomach as she looked around the vast desert. "But don't mind me." she said, her smile suddenly returning to her as if she had said nothing serious before hand. "If you ever need anything feel free to stop by the fruit stand."

Holden frowned slightly.

"You seem to know quite a bit about strange goings on in Clauden, Ms. Fontain. You wouldn't happen to know anything about the strange happenings at the depot, would you?"

Something about Alexandrea's words made Holden feel uneasy again. It appeared that Holden had made a mistake when he had first looked at Clauden. The town seemed to be everything but quiet.

Alexandrea shrugged. "I know no more than the average resident of Clauden." She said as she began to walk towards the market. "I know nothing of the depot, nor do I wish to... and chances are... you may not either."

With that said Alex lifted a hand in the air to wave back to him. "Good bye, Mr. Holden." she added cheerfully as she pulled a hood over her head to protect her burning skin from the sun.

In that little bit of time she had almost forgotten that she was part vampire.

Holden watched Alexandrea walk back down the dusty road. He was alone again.

Holden felt on edge from his conversation with her. She hadn't been very subtle when it came to telling him that Clauden was one strange place.

The irony of this didn't escape him. Holden had been searching for a real example of the paranormal for some time. Now he hoped that his first experience wouldn't be his last.

As the sun finally set, Holden walked down the path towards the abandoned depot.

Karin had always liked the desert. It made what little life it contained all the more precious. Karin skipped through the night's stillness as a young child of about 8. She saw a jumpy looking man wandering by himself, and thought it might be fun to spook him.

She quietly crept up behind him, then without any warning, tapped him on the shoulder.
