She had nothing to eat tonight, which didn’t necessarily make it different from any other night. Sooner or later she would have to find some odd job. It was still summer. There was always a farm job to be found. She could always fix things. Then again, she could always find some megalomaniac bent on some obscene battle between forces of the universe to Follow. They always seemed to find good meals and warm beds. It seemed necessary for the position. But no, she wasn’t in the mood. She would like to be her own boss a little longer. Besides, she hadn’t gotten out of the last one clean.

The slip up in question was dragging her boot off her foot, or at least making a good show of trying. It had been about a week since she’d pulled the little bugger out of a burning house, all while avoiding being devoured by her kin. Verochka had doubled in size since then. Her front paws had grown claws and her wings had what looked like stubby feathers. She looked, more or less, like a tiny Gryphon, save for her tail, which sported a stinger. Senka had one or two bandages around her fingers from the few moments she didn’t move out of the beak’s way fast enough. She was telling a story.

It was the same story she’d told her many times over already. It was the story of the Volgeni. Senka figured, if she was going to ask the little monstrosity to follow her, she might as well understand why. Vera gave up on the boot and took to chasing butterflies. She flattened one with a deft leap and began disemboweling it. Something snapped. Half a moment later Senka’s brain had realized it wasn’t the butterfly. She rolled to her knees. Vera, in a sign of a bright mind or a high level of self-preservation, abandoned her kill and jumped closer to her red headed owner. Not too close, mind you. She didn’t want the human getting the idea she liked her.

“Anyone there?” Senka called out. It sounded friendly enough, sure, but she wasn’t taking any chances. She’d made enough enemies in her life. You shoot at folks one time and suddenly everyone has a grudge. Ridiculous.

"Cool it, would ya!" Sakura growled, "I only came up here for some fresh air." The hair blew gently through her hair. It felt exceedingly refreshing. "This hill is still public property last I checked."

“I’m…I’m sorry.” Senka said awkwardly. She’d never known how to handle forceful people. She had come from a world of subtlety and quiet penitence. The girl seemed very…loud. Vera growled and Senka snapped her hand overher fuzzy head. The little monster silenced.

“Yes. I guess it is.” Quick, she thought. Say something normal. “I was recently set on fire and I’m still a bit jumpy.” These things happened to other people right?

After an overly prolonged absence, Mariah, once again in Clauden, stepped into the confrontation.

Her first instinct upon hearing the voices was to turn around and go home. She stopped where she stood and mulled it over. Mariah had no real business on the hill. She certainly did not want to be in anyone's way.

Why leave, though? It was, after all, public property, as one of the voices said.

Mariah smiled to herself and took a seat right where she was at the base of the hill. Her dress was inexpensive and brown and a little dirt wouldn't hurt it. With one hand, she draped her blonde tresses over one shoulder and began to weave a loose braid, humming quietly.

The sky was so beautiful in the desert.

Sakura opened her mouth to say something and stopped. Did that girl just tell her she was set on fire recently? First a bear appears out of nowhere in the tavern and now this? "Really, that's interesting. Never really heard a story like that before. Which is cool. Normalcy is vastly overrated," she nodded, "The names Sakura Yoko Midvalley."

((OOC: YAY! Internet is back! Sorry about the wait))

Normalcy is overrated? She would beg to differ. She often forgot that there were those who would choose her life. It is hard to see something as amazing or special when it’s all you know. She nodded back and gave a smile. It was actually strange to see such a shy smile on a such a strong face.

“Senka Liliya Secutus.” She said with a small bow. Somehow she managed to make it look formal even from her kneeling position. “Disciple of the Volgeni. And this,” she moved aside her heavy coat to reveal Vera. The little monster was attacking her boot with her beak, tiny, fluffy wings flapping uselessly, “is Verochka. She’s not quite as strange as she looks, I assure you. What brings you here?”
