Emma kept walking ignoring Ray. She reached her cottage and went inside, collapsing on the sofa in the front parlour. She was so disappointed at the events of the night before. Her life had been dedicated to the experimentation of bringing loved ones back to life. She had missed her chance with Elaina, and now Wade was busy digging up the body. She much preferred her own method, where you simply took over the body of a living person. Oh well,no use crying over dead bodies. She needed a new project to work on,one that would hold her interest.Emma sat staring at the worn out rug on the floor, pondering what direction she should take with her life now.

Ray walked in without knocking.

"That was rude ma'am. We were having a nice civil conversation, and you just walk away.", he said, helping himself to an apple on the table, "What are you doing lying there anyway, it's clearly morning. So I'm still unemployed. That fellow in the castle still beckons, though my fine liquors seem to have purged his name from my consciousness."

He took a deep breath.

"That was a lot of big words. You got anything to drink?"

"There is a well out the back,if you are thirsty.Maybe you should have a wash while you are out there. "

Emma suddenly sat upright.

"How did you get in here? Put my apple down," she ordered.

"You want this?" Ray said, looking at the half-eaten apple uncertainly, "Suit yourself."

He tossed the half eaten apple and sat down on one of the wooden chairs by the table.

"And I'll pass on the well. Probably not very strong.", he said politely.

"You can have the apple," she said feeling guilty.

She was starting to feel repentent over her behaviour.

"Would you like a cup of coffee,Ray?" she asked trying to make amends.

"Sure", Ray said with a smile, "So what do you say? Still want to go see Will of the castle? I'm sure I heard him say he wanted an assistant."

"His name was Wade, not Will, remember that crazy guy in the bar. No,maybe I will set up my own business,"she answered absently exploring her options.
"Ray,do you like to dance? I hear there is a ball tonight"

Ray was most certainly not a dancer. He was surprised at even being asked. He hardly looked like a nobleman prissy type. He knew a few drinking jigs, but he knew better to mention that.

"Nope, can't say I do", he said, choosing to reply to the dancing remark and hoping she'd drop the subject altogether.

"Well I guess I owe you something for not shooting me when you had the opportunity. I would like to think it was human decency that made you refrain, rather than your mercenary side. Would you like a nice home cooked meal? I shall cook for you, if you cut me some firewood. Looks like it could get chilly later."

She looked at him ,for a reaction. Emma had really wanted to go to the ball, but she could see he would not be moved on the matter.

Ray WAS hungry... he hadn't eaten in who knows how long. He agreed.

"Alright, where's the axe?", he asked.

"In the stables out back, it may need sharpening.I haven't had need to use it for a while," she stated matter of factly.

Emma set about making Ray a delicous meal of steak, fresh mushrooms, baby potatoes with beans and carrots picked from her kitchen garden. Luckily there was a lemon meringue pie she had baked the day before, for desert. Satisfied that dinner was under control, Emma hurried into her bedroom and took out her favourite gown, just right for a ball. She laid it on the bed, pulling out her matching shoes and then raced back to the kitchen to check on dinner.
She would ask Ray about the ball again, after he had eaten his main meal, maybe over desert, when he was feeling content. After all wasn't the way to a mans heart through his stomach?

Ray briefly considered actually chopping up some logs for Emma. But one look at the axe put him off that. Stealing was easier, and that would give him some time to drink from his flask of whiskey. Besides, doing chores and caring for the household reminded him of when he had a home of his own... He stopped himself, reminding himself that those days were boring and over.

He hoofed it over to the next door neighbors, and satisfied that they were nowhere around, he helped himself to a large stack of wood from their woodpile. He took it back to Emma's house, left it just out of sight, leaning against the house so she couldn't see out the window.

He then sat down on top of the pile, popped open his flask of whiskey and had a good drink.

Emma busied herself with setting the table. Something was wrong, but she couldn't actually pinpoint it. She listened for sounds of the axe chopping through the wood, but there was only silence. Terrified that Ray was laying on the ground injured and bleeding, she ran outside to offer assistance.
She found him outside leaning against the house, with a flask in his hand. He hadn't even worked up a sweat,he was either super fit or this wood had not been chopped by him.

"That didn't take you long, look at you not even a single drop of sweat , "she said staring at the large pile of wood.

Inside she was fuming, but calmed herself down. What use was it to jump to conclusions.Maybe he had chopped the wood without getting dirty, smelly or sweaty. Besides there was a decent pile of wood there for her use later on.

"Dinner is almost ready," she said sweetly.

"All right!", Ray said, rubbing his hands together in anticipation. He tried to flop down on a chair at the table, but his coordination was somewhat inhibited by his "Firewood chopping", so he missed, hit his head on the table, and fell to the ground.

He was a dazed, but felt fine. Thankfully, Emma was busying herself with cooking, and hadn't noticed. He carefully pulled himself up onto the chair and sat down, slumping a bit. He stared blankly at the wall a full 30 seconds. He felt his forehead. There was no blood. That was good. Very good. He noticed a glass of water on the table. That was good too.

Very good.

Wait no, it wasn't. It didn't have no booze in it.

He emptied the rest of his canteen into it. He took a good drink.

He then let himself out, and went to the outhouse. He opened the door and dropped the canteen in the toilet. He laughed at this and then lost his balance and nearly fell in. Luckily, he caught himself and made his way back into the house. He carefully sat down on the table, then stood up, then sat down on the chair. He then carefully folded his hands on the table and waited for Emma.

Emma was flushed from working in the hot kitchen. Finally the meal was all ready to be served. She reached up into the towering china cabinet and pulled out two of the plates from her best dinner set. They had been unused for so long ,sitting in her hope chest that she decided the time was right to put them to use. Befitting the occasion she pulled out her silver cutlery, and laid them next to the fine bone china plates. Emma then arranged the food on the plates, ready to carry into the dining room.
She walked into the room. Ray was already seated at the table, waiting for his dinner. She laid the plate in front of him, the aroma of the food making her hungry.Emma quicky took her seat and started saying grace. Whilst her head was down, she could smell something else above the aroma of the food. With her head still bent she snuck a look at Ray,the smell was coming from him,he smelt like a mixture of vodka and the outhouse. His trousers appeared to be slightly damp. Was that from sweat from his supposed labours or had the poor man had an accident?
